The steam Vessel Iduna ( named after the Norse Goddess Iduna who issued the golden apples of eternal youth to the heroes in Valhalla) is based on a 36 inch fibre glass hull kindly produced by Cliff Galsworthy.
It is powered by a vertical, twin cylinder, piston valved, reversible steam engine Q3B, 10mm bore x 12mm stroke, designed to run at approx 50psi steam pressure.
Power is supplied from a 4 in Centre flue boiler equiped with 6 Galloway water tubes within a 40mm centre flue.
Firing is by standard butane/propane mix liquid gas to a 36mm ceramic burner. The pressure safety valve is set to blow at 60 psi.
Fully radio controlled on 2.4 Ghz, controls include:-
Forward / reverse
Boiler water pump
Sailing duration depends upon gas usage, usually about 1 hour and takes approximately 15 minutes to achieve a fully head of steam from cold.
